DIY No-Poo Rye Hair Cleanser

Are you a fan of the no-poo movement and keen on kicking off the shampoo off your shelves? Here’s an easy hair cleanser you can whip up with basic ingredients and get stunning hair.

No-poo has been gaining approval from a lot of quarters. But like explained earlier, it is not for everyone. For some it will work, some might like it, for some it might be a necessity and for some it might just not work. Like everything else, try and decide if it works for you.

Sometimes, the right ingredients are what you need to get positive results. While a method might work, the ingredients might not. So, if you’re giving no-poo a shot, here’s another recipe to try out.

Loaded with harmful and damaging ingredients among other things, most so-called hair care products and shampoos don’t do anything good for your hair. The unforgivable part is that they actually damage your hair, scalp and most importantly your health! This is a simple, easy and natural recipe you should try.

Ingredients

Rye Flour – ¼ Cup
Rose Water – 1 Tsp.
Water – as needed
Argan Oil –a few drops.

Instructions

Sieve the rye flour to get an even and creamy mixture. Sieving will remove any lumps from the flour.

Just mix all the ingredients and your hair cleanser is ready!

Why These Ingredients?

Rich in starch, Rye is a gentle but effective cleanser. It’s a emulgator that’s suitable even for sensitive skin as it’s gentle. Rich in nutrients it improves your hair and scalp health. Neutral in pH levels, it also gets rid of dirt and keeps your hair and scalp fresh and clean.

Rose Water is optional and is a soothing and calming ingredient that’s also cooling and leaves your hair shiny and soft. It is also a great moisturizing aid and a good addition if you’re sensitive.

For those who are worried about leaving your hair and scalp high and dry, Argan Oil is a way to fi it. Again it’s optional and you can skip it.

How to Use the Hair Cleanser?

Add enough water to make a paste that’s not too runny or thick. It should be creamy and the texture should be easy to spread. Once that’s done your hair cleanser is ready.

Apply the cleaner to your hair and scalp – you don’t have to skimp. You can apply generously without worrying about it hurting your hair or scalp.

Let it sit for a minute or two (if you have sensitive scalp or if your scalp is dry), 3 – 5 minutes for normal scalp, up to 7 minutes for oily or greasy scalp. Usually you should be able to wash off after 3 – 5 minutes.

Rinse off with lukewarm – tepid water. Make sure to wash thoroughly so flour residue is not left behind.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

Fine grind works best for fine hair. If your hair is curly or dense, full grain rye might be easier to wash off.

If you have lighter hair color like Blonde, you can use Chickpea Flour instead. It’s a bleaching agent so using on dark hair can cause lightening or even greying!

For those with dark hair Oatmeal, Rice Flour, Green Gram Flour are also good alternatives.

Additional Tips

You might need ¼ Cup for medium length hair, though you can reduce if you have shorter hair or increase for longer hair.

You can use rinses for added shine and sheen, or nourishment. ACV gives shine and removes build-up, whereas, herbal rinses can help with a lot of hair and scalp problems.

Go with what ingredients you like and suits your hair and scalp better. When you get the ingredients right, your results can be really good. In my opinion, as much tricky as getting a recipe right is, the trial and error is worth the results when things go right!
