DIY Musk Hair Wax

We all love to style our hair differently but some styles really need additional help for staying in place – that’s where hair waxes or other styling aids come into play.

Hair wax helps when you want to tame your hair, keep it in place, tuck flyaway strands, or for styles like spikes, etc. It also adds texture and sheen, and can be used by both men and women. Adding essential oils not only lend aroma but also offer benefits depending on the essential oil used for the recipe.

I wanted to use musk because it is good for hair, and I absolutely love the fragrance. I wanted the aroma to be a combination of freshness and musk – like the sports deodorant.

So I went for a combination of essential oils, though you can work on the combination that you love the most. Here’s what I came up with.

Ingredients

Beeswax – ½ Tbsp.
Shea Butter – 1 Tbsp.
Argan Oil – 1 Tsbp.
Avocado Oil – 1 Tbsp.
Spikenard Essential Oil – 7 Drops.
Cedarwood Essential Oil – 5 Drops.
Neroli Essential Oil – 5 Drops
Cinnamon Essential Oil – 2 Drops.

Instructions

Melt the Shea Butter and Beeswax in your double boiler.

Once melted add the Argan oil and Avocado oil and remove from heat.

Stir to combine and let it cool down.

Once cool, add the essential oils to the mixture.

Stir and set aside to cool or refrigerate.

Whip the ingredients to a nice fluffy mixture if you prefer a lighter consistency.

Alternatively, you can just transfer the mixture after adding essential oils to a hair wax jar and use as needed.

How to Use it?

Take a small dollop of the hair wax and apply on your hair.

Style as usual. Remember – little goes a long way.

Besides, you can always add more, but can’t reduce after you dab it on your hair.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

If you want a light hair wax add less of Beeswax and more of Shea Butter.

If you want hard wax, add ¼ Cup of Beeswax for ¼ Cup of Shea Butter and Oils combined.

I have used Avocado Oil for sheen and shine, though you can use any carrier oil including Coconut Oil if you don’t prefer the “silicone” like sheen Avocado can give.

I have used Shea Butter, though you can also use other butters including Cocoa Butter – just alter the ratios to suit the butter you’re using.

Essential oils – this combination is good for both men and women, though love this combination. However, you can use whatever combination is ideal for you.

You can also add a few drops of Vitamin E Oil for added shelf life.

Do you know you can also add Clay or Starch to the wax for getting matte effect when using hair wax?
