DIY Herbal Shampoo for Oily Hair

Oily hair needs different care to look lustrous and voluminous. Using products that are designed for oily hair and scalp can help in this regard.

This is a shampoo that’s good for those with oily hair and scalp. You don’t want the hair being weighed down or looking greasy and limp, right? This shampoo will leave your locks shiny and bouncy. Though mild it’s good at curbing the oil levels and suitable for oily or combination scalp. Can be used for those with normal scalp, too.

Let’s look at the recipe and then more about the ingredients and how to use it.

Ingredients

Distilled Water – 2 Cups

Lemon Balm Leaves – 1 Tbsp.

Gingko Biloba Leaves – 1 Tbsp.

Lemongrass – 1 Tbsp.

Yarrow – 1 Tbsp.

Peppermint Leaves – 1 Tbsp.

Lemon / Orange Peel – 2 Tbsp.

Liquid Castile Soap = ⅓ – ½ Cup (as needed)

Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.

Cedarwood Essential Oil – 16 – 25 Drops

Instructions

In a bowl add the distilled water and boil it.

When it comes to a rolling boil, switch off the stove and remove from heat.

Add all the herbs and lemon / orange peel to the water.

Let it steep for 25 minutes or more.

Keep it covered till the water is steeped with the herbs.

When it cools down open the bowl, stir once and strain the mixture.

Now add the essential oil(s), argan oil and liquid castile soap and mix well.

Transfer to a sterilized pump dispenser and use as needed.

Shelf Life

Keep it refrigerated. Lasts for a month or four weeks when refrigerated. It lasts on the shelf without refrigeration for a week – so you can keep a small bottle in your shower and change it out every week.

Usage & Frequency

You need only about a spoon for a wash. It won’t really foam a lot, so as long as you have enough for your hair and scalp and you feel fresh, you’re good.

Who Can use this Shampoo?

The ingredients are chosen for oily hair. So those with oily or combination scalp can use this. It also works for those with normal scalp. If you have dry scalp, modify it to suit your scalp requirements if you want to give this a shot. We will also be adding a similar recipe for dry scalp, so you can try that or the other recipe we shared earlier that is for all scalp types.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can also add Rosemary Essential Oil to this recipe or Rosemary Leaves. It promotes hair growth and is ideal to balance scalp’s sebum production.

You can use other sebum balancing essential oils like Lemon Essential Oil, Chamomile Essential Oil, Lavender Essential Oil, Eucalyptus Essential Oil, etc.

You can also use other shampoos shared here, or baby shampoo or our very own Argan Shampoo instead of liquid castile soap.

If you don’t get Gingko Biloba Leaves, you can use the dried leaves or substitute it with Rosemary or Peppermint Leaves.

As always, feel free to tweak the recipe and come up with a version that reflects your requirements and preferences. Questions? Feedback or Requests? Do write to us. Don’t have time for DIY recipes? Try Vitamins range of premium products that use Keratin and Argan Oil for hair and scalp care.
