DIY Hair Spray That Works!

Hair spray is a very common styling product women use these days. However, most commercial sprays are loaded with chemicals and can leave your hair dull and damaged in the longer run. Want to prepare a chemical-free hair spray that works?

Hair sprays are usually used for holding your hair in place, so your hairstyle remains in tact and there are no flyaways. But commercial sprays cost a fortune and prolonged use can leave your hair damaged. Premature greys, split ends, dull or lifeless hair, hair fall and hair thinning are just a few issues that are a result of improper hair care and hair damage. You wouldn’t want to compromise on your crowning glory now, would ya?

So, let’s take a look at the recipe first.

Ingredients

Water – ½ Cup
Sugar – 1 Tsp.
Essential Oil – 2 Drops
Argan Oil – 2 drops (Optional)

Instructions

In a small bowl, heat water.

When it is nearly boiling, remove from heat.

Add the sugar and stir and let it sit for a few minutes.

When slightly cooled down, add in the essential oil and Argan Oil and mix gently.

Transfer to a sterilized sprayer and use as needed.

How to Use the Spray?

Spray on to dry hair and style as usual. This spray doesn’t hold your hair firmly, so works well when you want your hair soft like when leaving it open. If you need better hold, wait till this dries off, before spraying again. However, if this doesn’t work for you, you could try another recipe that offers better hold.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

I recommend using Geranium essential oil to keep bugs away from your hair! Sugar tends to attract them, so if you don’t use alcohol, Geranium, Lemon Grass or Catnip works well. However, I recommend one or two drops if since most don’t like the smell of Lemon Grass or Catnip!

You can use vodka for both recipes, it basically keeps bugs away and prevents molds – you get more shelf life. However, refrigeration fixes that problem easily!

For the second recipe, you can skip salt as it can leave your hair a little dry – it improves texture, but it is not for everyone! I don’t prefer salt, as my hair seems lifeless after use.

Shelf Life

Depending on where you live, you can refrigerate the recipe if you have problems with mold. I did not have that problem and was able to use the spray for a few weeks without using alcohol as a preservative. I refrigerate during summers.
