DIY Hair Mud for Cleansing

We heard your requests and decided to come up with a cleansing hair mud recipe. What better way to cleanse and nourish your hair than mud, right?

So, I wanted to prepare a cleansing mud that would also double up as a mask. We’re going to let it sit for a bit, so why not nourish my hair, right?

The tricky part here is wet ingredients are often a breeding ground for bacteria, molds and what not, without preservatives. Since this can do without preservatives and we can keep it dry and prepare every time we need it, we’re going to get the ingredient ready. This way, you can grab the bottle, mix it and apply! No mess, no worries.

Ingredients

Fuller’s Earth Clay – 1 Cup
Bentonite Clay – 1/3 Cup
Kaolin Clay – 2/3 Cup
Slippery Elm Powder – 2 Tbsp.
Soapnut Powder – 4 Tbsp.
Indian Gooseberry Powder – 3 Tbsp.
Neem Powder – 1 Tbsp.

Instructions

Add all the ingredients to a sterilized glass jar and shake well to mix – alternatively you can mix the ingredients in a mixing bowl and then transfer to the container.

How to Use the Hair Mud?

Take required quantity of hair mud – depending on your hair volume and preference.

Add to a mixing bowl and add a spoon of Argan Oil, a Tbsp. each of Aloe Juice and Rose Water – The Aloe Juice will help combat drying along with Rose Water, while Rose Water also adds a nice aroma.

Add additional water (you can add more Aloe Juice if you have dry hair or scalp) to make a paste – not too thick and not too runny either. A light paste is good – easy to apply.

Apply on your scalp and hair, massage gently and let it sit for a minute or two – ideal if you don’t have very oily, or oily scalp and hair. In case of oily hair or scalp, you can leave it for 5 – 7 minutes.

Wash out thoroughly.

Done!

Why These Ingredients?

The choice of clay and herbs are a matter of preference and liking. So, feel free to swap. As for my current choices – I had fuller’s earth and like that it isn’t drying like Volcanic Clays. So that’s my major ingredient.

Bentonite Clay is a volcanic Clay that’s detoxifying and highly mineral-rich. But since it is drying, I have added less of that and Kaolin Clay to counter the drying effect and soothe hair.

Slipper Elm is especially good to combat frizz and tangling – especially since clay isn’t as easy as shampoo to apply or to wash off. The slip will prevent tangling of hair.

Soapnut Powder to help with removing grease – though it is not needed as clay does a good job at that. For those who will miss the foam, soap nut powder is an option.

Neem Powder will get rid of scalp issues including Dandruff, while Gooseberry will nourish hair and also, keeps it smooth and soft.

Do try this out and let us know how it fairs. You can also mix the wet and dry ingredients and refrigerate it to prevent mold and bacterial infestation. Don’t have time for DIY Recipes? Try HY Vitamins for your hair and scalp care requirements.
