Ready for another interesting all-natural recipe? This is a traditional recipe that uses Acorus Calamus to arrest hair fall and promote hair growth. Let’s look at the recipe, shall we?
Ingredients
Coconut Oil – 100 Ml
Sesame Oil – 100 Ml
Castor Oil – 100 Ml
Acorus Calamus Root – 4 – 5 pieces
Fenugreek Seeds – 1 Tbsp.
Preparation
Slightly pound the Acorus Calamus Root pieces – no crushing, just pounding. The pounding will expose the inner flesh and make absorption of nutrients easier, while soaking in oil.
In a glass bottle, add the three oils along with fenugreek seeds and Acorus Calamus root pieces. Tie cheesecloth to cover the opening, if it is too wide.
Leave this bottle in the sun everyday – place it well after dawn and remove well before dusk (once the sunlight begins to drop). Do this for a week.
Use this infused oil as needed.
Option: 2 – If you don’t get enough sunlight, do this instead
In a heavy bottomed kadai or pan bring the oils to a boil and add the pounded Acorus Calamus Root pieces and fenugreek seeds. Let it simmer for a few minutes and transfer to a sterilized jar. Use as needed.
How to Apply This Oil?
Ideally, massage this oil into your scalp once every two days, or twice a week. Applying it at night is best, though if you have cold or sinus related issues, use it during the day.
After massaging the oil into your scalp, gently massage your scalp for about fifteen minutes in circular motions, to help permeate the oil and also to promote better circulation.
Alternatively, you can massage this oil to your scalp and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour before washing off with a herbal shampoo.
Tips & Precautions
Castor Oil and Sesame Oil are also know for their cooling properties. So, if you have any issues to sinus or have cold or flu frequently, you can substitute Castor Oil and Sesame Oil with Coconut Oil in this recipe.
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can burn the Acorus Calamus Root in fire and grind it to a powder and add it to the oil. This will give the oil a darker shade – so if you have lighter hair, don’t try this.
If you are planning to use this oil before hair wash, you can add onion juice to this recipe. Onion promotes hair growth and stops hair loss. If you use onion pieces or juice, heat up the oil to remove moisture.
I add a few drops of Argan Oil to this recipe for added benefits.
Why These Ingredients?

Castor Oil cools down the body and promotes healthy hair. It curbs hair fall, promotes thicker and healthier hair and prevents premature hair graying. If you have hair fall or hair thinning, this is one of the best oils to grab.
Sesame Oil is known to cool down the body – traditionally, hair fall is often due to overheating of the body. That’s one reason traditional recipes use body cooling agents to control hair fall and promote hair growth. Besides, it nourishes and moisturizes your hair and scalp. What more can you ask for?
Acorus Calamus – Have you heard about this root? This is a very famous root and used for an array of purposes in traditional medicine – internally and externally.
