DIY Hair Detangler

Hair detangler can come in handy when your hair is prone to tangles and frizz. Do you want to know how to prepare a hair detangler at home without adding harmful chemicals?

How do Detanglers Work?

Hair detanglers work by modifying your hair surface, so you can get rid of the tangles easily. They are much like a hair conditioner that either makes the surface of your hair softer and manageable b y getting it coated with oil or the like, or by making the surface smooth to reduce static electricity that worsens tangles or by acidifying your hair and tightening hair surface – this way or that, it makes sure your tangles can be removed without shedding tears or worse, hair.

Ingredients

Marshmallow Root Powder – 3 Tbsp.
Jojoba Oil – 1/4 Tbsp.
Argan Oil – 1/4 Tbsp.
Water – 1.5 Cup
Apple Cider Vinegar – 9 Tsp.
Lavender Essential Oil – 25 drops

Instructions

In a pot, add the marshmallow root powder and water. Bring the mixture to a boil.

When it begins to boil, simmer the mixture for about 15 – 20 minutes.

Strain the mixture to a mixing bowl using cheesecloth and let it cool down.

When it cools down, add the essential oil, Jojoba oil, Argan Oil and Apple Cider Vineger and mix vigorously to combine the ingredients thoroughly.

Transfer to a sterilizer spray dispenser and use as needed.

Frizzy Hair Before and After

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can use Lemon Essential Oil if you want to lighten your hair, or have lighter hair or if you don’t mind the hair lightening properties of lemon oil.

You can use Chamomile or Lavender if you have dry or damaged hair.

If you have oily hair, use an essential oil with astringent properties like Tea Tree Oil.

If the consistency seems thicker, you can dilute it to make it possible to spray.

Alternatively, you can skip both Marshmallow Root Powder and Flax Seeds and just go with equal quantities of water and Apple Cider Vinegar (1/3 Cup), Jojoba Oil (1 Tsp.) and Essential Oil of your choice (15 – 20 drops). This is suitable when you have fine or less frizzy hair.

Don’t have time to prepare the recipe or worried about the results or shelf life? Just add a few spoons of leave-in hair conditioner into a spray dispenser, add water and shake well. Use this mixture for detangling, instead.

How to Use it?

Shake the bottle thoroughly to ensure the ingredients aren’t separated. Just spray on dry hair and use a detangling comb or your fingers to get rid of tangles. You can wait for a few seconds after spraying before detangling.

What’s the Shelf Life for the Recipe?

I usually refrigerate the detangler since I have not used any preservatives. I prepare a batch every 2 – 3 weeks.

Substituting Flax Seed instead of Marshmallow Root

If you prefer Flaxseeds over Marshmallow Root, you can 1 Tbsp. of flaxseed for the recipe and use the flaxseed gel instead of Marshmallow Root in the recipe. Basically, both have a slippery texture and make detangling a breeze. Unlike Marshmallow Root Powder, Flaxseed can give a gel like consistency to the recipe. You just have to increase the water quantity if that happens to you.
