There are times when hair needs sprucing up and what better than a hair perfume to do that, right?
You might be a little down, or can’t wash your hair for a surprise meeting or visit, or you did not take your customary hair wash due to flue, and whatnot. The reasons are many. But when your hair feels icky and in need of a shower but you can’t hair perfumes can come in handy 😉 Or they could just be a way to improve your mood too!
I am planning on a few DIY gifts for my friends this holiday season and a good hair perfume is one the of the list of goodies I have chosen. Want to know how I make it?
Ingredients
Distilled Water – 30 Ml
Glycerin – 1 Tsp.
Rosemary – 6 Drops
Thyme – 3 Drops
Myrrh – 2 Drops
Instructions
Add the Essential Oils and Glycerin to a sterilized dark glass spritzer and shake gently to combine.
Now add the Distilled Water and shake to combine.
Done!
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
For a perfume the key is getting the ratio of the top, base and middle notes right. I have used the ratio of 3:2:1 though some prefer 4:2:1. The ratio is slightly different based on one’s preference and purposes. If you get the ratio right, the perfume will have a harmonious effect for you. I have chosen Lavender, Thyme and Myrrh as my choice of aroma. You could choose others too. I have listed the Top, Middle and Base notes for you to choose from:
Top notes: Anise, Eucalyptus, Bergamot, Lemongrass, Rosemary
Middle Notes: Thyme, Pine, Geranium, Clary Sage, Jasmine, Lavender, Clove
Base Notes: Cedarwood, Vetiver, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Myrrh
You can use this as a reference for your perfumes too. The notes sometimes vary and some oils fall under more than one category. So go with how you feel rather than the logistics of it. That works best in my opinion once you get a hang of blending.
Being porous, hair holds scents longer so you don’t need a very strong perfume. If you love woodsy aroma take base note up a notch, I love it when Vetiver or Sandalwood hint is more than floral or citrus scents. But it is not for everyone, or every day. Perfume preferences vary based on our moods too!
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can use Jojoba Oil or Sweet Almond Oil to this recipe. I don’t prefer adding it as it tends to get separated and I have to shake before I use – I forget this when in a rush!
You can use Aloe Vera Gel to this recipe for shine and moisture.
You can also use Hydrosols instead of Essential Oils – I prepare the fall concoction (complete with fall flavors and use it). That’s my favorite than going with Essential Oils.
You can also use Rosemary Antioxidant Extract here not only as a natural preservative but also for the hair benefits.
Shelf Life
Though I haven’t had problems I like to prepare smaller batches and keep this refrigerated, as I don’t use preservatives (especially when you use Hydrosols and Oils together).
