DIY Coconut Milk Hair Oil

Have you heard about Coconut Milk Hair Oil? It is a nourishing, strengthening and vitalizing hair oil.

So, today we’re going to see a very unique recipe for hair care that comes from Kerala, often dubbed as God’s own country. Abundant coconut trees lie across this state and most of Kerala’s cuisine and jut about everything revolves around coconuts.

It isn’t surprising they came up with this recipe. This traditional Kerala recipe is a tad tricky to prepare but worth the effort. We’re going to look at the recipe first before going into more specifics. Ready everyone?

Ingredients

Coconut Milk – 200 Ml
Coconut Oil – 200 Ml
Water Hyssop powder – 1 ½ Tbsp.
Tulsi Leaf powder – 1 ½ Tbsp.
Aloe Vera Gel – 1 Tbsp.

Instructions

The Coconut Milk should be extracted from ripe coconuts. You can use any coconut but the ripe ones work better. You can grind the leaf powders along with the coconut too.

Add Aloe Gel to the Coconut Milk mixture and set aside.

Extract Coconut Oil from fully ripe and dried Coconuts or you can get cold-pressed Coconut Oil.

Now, in a heavy bottomed pan add the Coconut Milk Mixture along with Coconut Oil and heat up.

When the oil is heated up and infused with all the ingredients and there’s no moisture left – the oil is usually hot and emit smoke lightly at this point.

Remove form heat and let it cool down.

Sieve using a cheesecloth and transfer to a sterilized glass container.

Use as needed.

It is a popular hair oil preparation in Kerala and know to promote hair growth and curb hair and scalp problems including hair loss and dandruff.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add more herbs like False Daisy, Hibiscus, Margosa, Curry Leaves, Fenugreek, etc.

You can also add a small piece of Camphor to combat or prevent dandruff.

For added aroma, Sandalwood Powder or Vettiver pieces are a great idea.

Tips

For this recipe, ripe coconuts are used for both milk and the oil. For oil the coconuts are fully dry.

You can tweak the recipe to suit your requirements and style.

The leaves are usually added fresh – ground to a paste by adding them with Coconut or individually.

How to Use the Hair Oil?

Detangle your hair and apply this hair oil by massaging it into your scalp.

Massage for a couple of minutes using your fingers and let it sit for thirty minutes before washing off your hair.

You can use this as your regular hair oil too –apply after air-drying your hair.
