DIY Aloe Hair Styling Gel

For those who wanted a simpler but effective hair styling gel, here’s a variation with Aloe Vera Gel as the main ingredient. Want to know how this gel is made?

This is a very simple and straightforward variation of hair gel that also helps your hair. Let’s take a look at the recipe first.

Ingredients

Aloe Vera Gel – ¼ Cup
Vitamin C – a pinch
Flax Seeds – 1 Cup
Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.
Myrrh Essential Oil – a few drops

Instructions

Soak the flaxseeds overnight in a cup of water.

Get your Aloe Gel ready. For this – cut the bottle part of the Aloe Leaf and let the green liquid that ozzes out (latex) drain out fully.

When done, wash it a couple of time and peel off the leaf.

Remove the gel and add it to your blender with a spoon of Argan Oil and Vitamin C.

Blend for a few seconds and your aloe gel is ready. Set this aside and get started with the flaxseed gel.

Bring the soaked flaxseed mixture to a boil on medium – low flame.

Once it starts boiling, simmer for a few minutes.

When the mixture thickens, remove from heat.

Now, use cheesecloth or a thin old socks to filter the flax gel.

I found using a cheesecloth bag easier to get the gel out than filtering it.

So, just squeeze out the gel from the flax seed – you can opt for a thinner gel but try squeezing out and you will realize it is easier once you understand how to do it. The first few squeezes will look like nothing is happening. But then, the mixture will yield and you can start squeezing out in no time. Make sure you are wearing gloves so you don’t burn your hands and no – don’t wait to squeeze it out – it will thicken when it cools down and you can’t squeeze it out.

Once you have the gel in a bowl, add the aloe gel you prepare with the Myrrh EO and whisk for a few seconds.

Done!

Transfer to a sterilized jar and use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

For harder hold, you can add a few pinches of Gelatin to this – if you are adding gelatin, add it to slightly warm water and then whip it with the aloe gel or add the set gelatin while whisking.

You can also add a few spoons of Gelatin for moisture and shine.

While you don’t need oils for this recipe, you can add a spoon on Avocado oil if you have dry or damaged hair and in a need of sheen to make your hair look like it is back to life!

You can add any essential oil of you choice – if you like how Aloe Vera smells like, you don’t need any. Remember – if you let the green liquid drain out fully aloe doesn’t really smell too “herby”.

Shelf Life

This gel lasts a week or more when refrigerated – it is ideal to prepare smaller batches every week. It lasts longer if we add Vitamin E & C but I recommend fresher and smaller batches.

How to Use the Gel?

Take a small dollop of the gel and apply to your hair. Detangle and style as usual.
