Want to prepare your own hair styling gel? Try this quick and easy recipe with marshmallow root!
So, I have already shared a simple hair gel recipe using Flaxseeds. If you did not see it, here is the link for you. This is another recipe that offers better hold and uses marshmallow root. You ready for it?
Ingredients
Marshmallow Root – 4 Tbsp.
Flaxseeds – 1 Cup
Agar Agar – ½ Tsp.
Vitamin E Oil – 1 Tsp.
Spikenard Essential Oil – 5 – 10 Drops
Instructions
In a bowl, soak the Marshmallow Root with about 2 Cups of Water overnight. Refrigerate it if you live in a humid place, or just to be safer. In the morning, remove the bowl and strain the mixture.
Now, pour the marshmallow infused water into a bowl and add Flaxseeds to it. Bring to a boil.
In another mixing bowl (where you are going to get your ingredients together for combining) add the Agar Agar along with just enough water to dissolve it – do this while the Flaxseeds are almost ready for taking out.
Now, place a strainer on top of the mixing bowl where you have added Agar Agar and strain the Flaxseed Gel. Remember – it can be a little thick and you might have to turn it around to get most of the gel out of the seeds. I usually freeze the seeds right after this and reuse till the seeds are out of gel.
When you have the Flaxseed Gel in the bowl, add Vitamin E Oil and Spikenard Essential Oil.
Mix well and transfer to a sterilized container.
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can use any Essential Oil of your choice – I use cinnamon for my husband, Lavender or Jasmine for me, or other fragrances based on my mood or their benefits.
I add Vitamin E Oil for adding more shelf life to the recipe. You can skip it if you hair is oily, and use Citric Acid instead.
If your hair is dry or coarse, you can add a Tsp. of Glycerin to this recipe for extra moisture.
You can add a Tsp. of Jojoba Oil or Argan Oil for improving the moisturization of this recipe.
Marshmallow Root is optional and adds a slippery feeling to the gel making it easier to detangle. This is particularly good if you have curly hair, or have frizz or tangles.
Agar Agar in this recipe gives better hold to the gel, though you can substitute it with Xanthum Gum if you prefer. You can also add Honey or Sugar for hold instead.
Though I have never had problems with combining the ingredients, sometimes, using your blender can get the gel combine well. If you want to do that, you just have to whip for a minute or less.
