How Can You Highlight Your Hair?

Many of us head to a salon to get highlights done. Do you know you can do that right at home, all by yourself? Want to know how? Hop on!

Lemon

Lemons are used for a range of skin and hair care purposes and we have written few recipes using Lemon already. But this one is different. We are going to use Lemon Juice for highlighting.

Take Lemon Juice and add equal quantity of Distilled Water. Now, use this to lighten dirty blonde or dark blonde hair, to get highlights. The best part – this doesn’t leave reddish streaks on your hair.

Peroxide

Peroxide is another ingredient one can consider, especially for lightening hair. We all know it is a hit in aesthetic dentistry for teeth whitening. For highlights, dilute required quantity of Hydrogen Peroxide in water and apply to chosen strands. Unlike other bleaches, this will lighten your hair quicker and you can wash it out too.

Vinegar

Do you know ACV can leave red highlights on your hair? You can dilute it with water in 1:1 ration and spray on your hair. Rinse out after 30 minutes and see how your hair looks when dry. If you have naturally red hair, you can use ACV without using hair color.

Henna

If you have dark hair like brown or black, you can use Henna to lighten your hair and get red highlights. You will need 3 Tbsp. of Henna Leaves / Powder. Boil this and spray on your hair overnight or just let it sit for 2 – 3 hours. Rinse off in the morning and let it air dry. Voilà!

Chamomile

Chamomile has long been used to lighten hair. A strongly brewed Chamomile Tea can be sprayed to your stands to get highlights. Usually, staying in sun for 30 minutes after spraying and then rinsing out works best.

Honey

Honey not only softens hair, but also lightens it due to its bleaching properties. Just mix together equal quantities of Honey and Olive Oil and apply to your hair strands. After 5 – 15 minutes, wash off and let it dry.

Another way to use Honey is with Vinegar. So, it would 2 parts of ACV and 1 part Honey, along with 1 Tbsp. warm Coconut Oil. I also add a few drops of Argan Oil. Best when left overnight and washed off in the morning.

Cinnamon

Mix 3 – 4 Tbsp. of Cinnamon Powder to your Conditioner and apply on your hair. Let it sit for 2 -3 hours and rinse off for shiny hair. This also protects your hair from sunrays, which is an added bonus.

Rhubarb

Another favorite of many, Rhubarb is ideal for adding golden highlights if you have blonde hair. Bring ¼ Cup of Rhubarb (chopped) to a boil and strain. Apply this tea to your hair and wash off after 10 minutes.

Baking Soda

Do you know Baking Soda can lighten hair? Add ½ Cup of Baking Soda and add enough Warm Water to make a paste. Apply this to your hair and let it sit for 20 minutes. Wash off and if you want to lighten it further, repeat the process.

Salt

Do you know why swimming lightens hair color? Due to salt! So, just dissolve some salt in water and use that to lighten your hair and create highlights. Wait for 30 minutes before rinsing out and see the results when dry. The best part – you also get beach hair!

Vitamin C

Add a few Vitamin C tablets to your Shampoo and apply to your hair. Rinse off and air-dry. Crushing the tablets makes this easier.

The results can vary with the individual, so try how and what works for you. Different hair types will need varying soaking up time, so watch out for that too. Enjoy your experiment and have fun! Don’t have time for DIY Recipes? Try HY Vitamins Hair Care Products for healthy and lustrous hair.
