Dry shampoos are the latest trend. Is it good? Should you go “no-poo” or not? These are questions many of us have. We want answers, don’t we?
So, where were we? Aah, yes – Dry shampoo – a boon or bane. Before going into that, let’s understand what is a dry shampoo.
A dry shampoo is a powder or aerosol spray that gets rid of excess oil between hair washes, so your hairstyle can stay longer. Remember: While the trend of dry shampooing is becoming very popular lately, dry shampoos aren’t really new and have been around since 1970s!
Styling hair was a costly affair back then and also, styling too often can leave one’s hair damaged and lifeless. Besides, shower and after-shower care like detangling could be a messy affair for those with curly. That’s probably why dry shampoos became popular.
So, while the idea looks really fancy – no extensive long showers. Just spray or dust off and you are good to go. But it isn’t really that simple. Every trend has its share of admirers and naysayers. It would never change. The same goes for “no-poo” or dry shampoo.
So, is Dry Shampoo Really Good or Bad for Hair?
There are no right or wrong answers for some questions. It is more about what suits the person in question. What’s right for some could be wrong for others – it goes for this trend too.
Let’s examine it more. Dry shampoo was originally meant for in-between hair washes. It was never meant as a substitute for traditional shampoo.
Having that said – imagine this. Washing removes dirt and grime from your hair and scalp. By using a dry shampoo, one can’t get rid of it thoroughly. Besides, dry shampoo just removes excess oil – remember? This means, dirt and grime can accumulate and will affect (clog) hair follicles in the longer run. How can it be healthy?
With curly hair, using a dry shampoo that is powder-based can be more difficult and problematic that a regular shampoo wash! On the other hand, aerosol spray could help between washes. Even so, dry shampoos would not do a better or an equivalent job as traditional shampoos.
If the shampoo you chose is natural, you are just going to accumulate dirt and grime in the longer run and eventually, retard hair growth and ruin hair health. But if you use a chemical or synthetic dry shampoo, you are loading up the chemicals on your hair. Why would you want to do that?
Having considered these factors, dry shampoo might be good for some. For example: Those with sinus or asthma or lung related problems are advised to avoid hair wash often and suggested dry shampoos.
Of if you want to get prepped up for a function or party and don’t have time to wash, or not well and can’t shampoo your hair – dry shampoo works best.
There are times when it works and times when it won’t. You just need to know when! Don’t follow a trend because it is in vogue; follow if you want to because it is good for you! If you must use dry shampoo for whatever reason, make sure you choose natural and organic products and brush off your hair to avoid residue if you are using powder-based ones.
So, as I said earlier, choose what works for you. I have dry shampoo handy for between hair washes when I have to make myself look good. Otherwise, I prefer natural and organic products for hair care like the ones from HY Vitamins.
