Ingredients
Argan Oil – 2 Tsps.
Carrier Oil – 4 Tsps. (Jojoba, Coconut, Avocado, Sweet Almond, Olive, etc.)
Beeswax – 2 Tbsp.
Shea Butter / Cocoa Butter – 2 Tbsp.
Essential Oil – a few drops (Peppermint, Orange, Lemon, etc.)
Method
Take a double boiler if you have one, or take a thick glass vessel and place in a sauce pan. Now, add in the butter and bees wax and heat them at minimal temperature.
Once melted, add the Argan Oil, Carrier Oil and Essential Oil. You can add this after switching off the flame, or just before you do that.
Remove from heat, transfer to lip balm containers and let it set.
You should be able to fill 8 – 12 lip balm containers. Once dry, you are all set to use it.
Tweaking the Recipe
Of course, we all love the tinted balms. Don’t we? Want to make a tinted lip balm at home? It is very simple! Just get Alkanet Root Powder or Food Grade Colors of your choice, or Beet-based food color. Add that when you add the oils finally and yippee – the lip balm is tinted. For beet colorant or Alkanet powder, the lip balm can be mild pink, to berry color. Experiment and get your favorite shade.
If you use cocoa butter, you can skip the essential oils if you don’t want additional flavor.
I personally love Jojoba oil for the lip balm, since it is light and feels nice. However, those with very dry or chapped lips, or often left with one can pick Sweet Almond, Avocado, Coconut or Olive oil.
If you use cocoa butter, you might not need beeswax, but it tends to melt in tropical climates. You don’t want your lip balm to be runny and mess your pouch or dress. Right? Beeswax ensures it stays intact irrespective of changes in climate. Vegan or don’t prefer beeswax? You can substitute it with Soy Wax, Candelilla Wax or Carnauba Wax.
You can also add Vitamin E oil to spruce up the recipe. If you don’t want to prepare a whole stash for the first time, reduce the quantity but retain the ratios.
What’s with the Ingredients?
We have spoken a lot about Argan oil benefits for skin and so, it needs no introduction here!
As for Jojoba oil, it mimics our skin sebum and readily accepted by our body. Though a wax, it looks and feels like a light oil.
Cocoa butter and Shea butter are excellent moisturizers. I personally love cocoa butter for the recipe, especially because it smells great and did not trigger breakouts. But, if you feel the fragrance is overpowering or if you think it did not go well with your essential oil, choose Shea Butter.
Shea Butter does not have a fragrance and does an equally good job. Beeswax helps with setting the balm, though you can skip it.
If you want multiple colors, you can try food grade or organic and natural colors instead of beet or Alkanet root powder.
This is a very simple recipe, though it might need mild tweaking of ingredients or the proportion to suit your consistency preference. Don’t worry if the consistency is not right the first time, you will be able to perfect it soon, as this recipe is newbie-friendly.
