DIY Tea Hair Coloring – Brown Black

For those who wanted an option to color hair without using Henna, Tea is another option you can try.

It is important to understand that unlike Henna, Tea or even Coffee won’t give lasting results. So this would be more of a temporary fix though using Tea regularly is said to reverse graying.

However, this recipe is said to last for a few days, even a week or more depending on your hair and body. Having that said, many say this lasts longer than coffee, so that’s something!

This is another easy recipe and you only need 2 Ingredients – Yes, just two!

Ingredients

Tea – 6 Tbsp.
Alum – ½ Tsp.

Instructions

Divide the tea into two parts – equal parts. So, if you are taking 6 Tbsp. you would take 3 Tbsp. for each part.

Now, nicely roast one half till it is burnt – color turns to dark black and it smokes your entire kitchen!

Set the roasted tea aside.

Once this cools down, take half of it and another half from the raw tea you set aside earlier.

Grind it to a fine powder, along with the alum crystals (if you have powdered alum it is good – use it as it is without grinding).

Now, the other half you have set aside – half of roasted and half unroasted – add it to a pan with a lot of water.

Bring the tea and water mixture to a boil and let it boil for a bit – it is a good idea to cover the tea with water and add twice that amount of water – so it will boil for a good few minutes.

Once the mixture boils enough and the decoction becomes real thick – strain it. This mixture should be about ¼ cup of so – so say you can heat about a cup or more of water and reduce it to ¼th.

Filter this decoction – this is what you’re going to use to prepare a paste. So don’t add everything – add as you go.

In a mixing bowl, add the ground tea and alum mixture and add the decoction to make a thick paste.

Done!

Note: You can also take a second decoction to ensure no tea is waste and use it for the paste, or as a rinse.

How to Use the Hair Color?

If you want to use as spray – add the ground powder to a lot of decoction and spray it on cleansed / washed hair. Rinse off after 25 – 45 minutes.

If you want to use as a paste – apply it like you would apply any hair coloring paste – on your hair.

Cover your hair with a shower cap and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour.

If you let it sit for about ½ hour, the resulting color leans towards brown. The longer it goes it becomes darker and an hour makes it look more like brown black.

Wash of with a mild shampoo.

Done!

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add Fenugreek Seeds, Rosemary Leaves and some Thyme Leaves while preparing the tea decoction. This will ensure your hair is softer and the Rosemary and Thyme is said to help with reversing hair graying and hair growth.

You can add more or less tea depending on your hair length and volume – this quantity is for short or mid-length hair.
