DIY Hair Spray for Texturizing Hair

With wavy or curly hair, the advantage of using a texturizing ingredient is the definition in waves and curls. If you love that, this recipe is just for you!

With wavy hair, I like flouncing it around and making them more bouncy from time to time. After all, what’s the fun if we can’t flaunt and flounce the curls and waves, right?

So, I wanted a texturizer and though I like beach hair, it is not something I like to sport very often. I like my waves bouncy but soft, unlike the slightly rough texture that comes with beach waves.

So, I decided to tweak my spray to get just that and it worked really well 😉 Here’s how I did it and some tweaking ideas for you to try!

Ingredients

Himalayan Salt – 1 Tsp.
Aloe Vera Gel – ½ Tsp.
Magnesium Flakes – 1 Tbsp.
Jojoba Oil – ½ Tsp.
Argan Oil – few drops
Orange Juice – few drops (optional)
Cedarwood Essential Oil – 7 Drops
Black Tea – ½ Cup

Instructions

Heat ½ Cup of Distilled Water and brew the tea. The water should be hot but not boiling for brewing the tea.

Add in the Magnesium Flakes and Himalayan Salt.

Mix to dissolve salt and set aside to cool down for a bit.

When cooled, add in Jojoba Oil, Argan Oil, Orange Juice and Cedarwood Essential Oil.

Stir to combine.

Transfer to a spritzer and use as needed.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

Tea should be chosen according to your hair color – Black Tea for dark hair, Chamomile Tea or Rhubarb Tea for light hair, Hibiscus Tea for red hair, etc. However, this is optional and you can just go with water instead. Note that the tea can also add some tint to the recipe and this calls for refrigeration.

You can use any salt of your preference, including Sea Salt.

Magnesium Flakes or Epsom Salt, both work well. I like that it adds definition to the waves or curls and adds volume to hair. That’s why I like to add Epsom Salt or Magnesium Flakes to my texturizers.

Orange juice works well for dark hair and lemon juice for lighter hair or when you want to lighten your hair. It is however optional.

Aloe Vera, Jojoba Oil and Argan Oil are what make this recipe slightly different and gives softer curls or waves. You can also replace the Jojoba Oil with your leave-in conditioner.

Essential Oil is again your choice – you can choose what oil you prefer or like or need based on your requirements and preferences.

I am not a fan of Alcohol for my hair, as it tends to get dry easily. However, you can swap Vodka for Orange juice in this recipe.

Also, if your hair is thin or oily, you can skip adding Jojoba Oil or a leave-in and stick with Aloe Vera alone.

Shelf Life

Without tea, the spray lasts without refrigeration – depending on how you process to get Aloe Gel. If you are unsure, check our previous recipes where we discuss how to prepare Aloe Vera Gel.

However, if you add tea, refrigerate the recipe.

Use the spray in a week or two.

How to Use the Spray?

Spray this to your strands after detangling and scrunch your hair. Style as usual, or just flaunt the waves or curls – they look either way 😉
