DIY Hair Setting Lotion

I wanted a hair setting lotion that is easy to use and not gel-like. After a lot of research, I found something I can work with.

So, the consistency I was looking at is that of a lotion, so it is easy to apply on the strands and lighter. I was not looking at mucous-based or slimy preparations this time around, as I have a detangler for that.

So, I wanted something that would make styling easier and keep the strands in place. That’s how I decided on a setting lotion, so it doesn’t weigh down my hair like a cream or butter would.

I also wanted a simpler recipe that’s natural and easy to prepare, so I can prepare smaller and fresher batches every other time I have a need for it. Let’s take a look at the ingredients first.

Ingredients

Gelatin – ½ Tsp.
Glycerin – ½ Tsp.
Distilled Water – 1½ Cup
Lavender Essential Oil – 7 Drops

Instructions

Warm the distilled water.

Add Gelatin to it.

Wait for a few seconds.

Whip with a fork for a few seconds and add in Glycerin and Lavender Essential Oil.

Continue whipping till the Gelatin dissolves completely.

Now, add a cup of Distilled Water (no need to heat this).

Whip with a fork till the consistency is uniform. You can also use your hand blender to blend the ingredients – easier and faster.

Done!

Tips to Tweak the Recipe or Make it Easier!

You can go with a blender right away, instead of using a fork. That simplifies the entire process and works better. The fork method is for those who don’t use a hand blender and can’t whip small quantities.

You can use any Essential Oil or Aroma or Perfume of your choice for scenting the lotion. I have used Lavender though you can use your favorite perfume, or even Eau de Cologne or After-shave or Mists. Just make sure the ingredients are suited for your hair type – e.g.: don’t go with alcohol-based perfume or blends if you have dry hair or damaged hair.

You can work the ratio of the ingredients to your preference and requirement. You can also prepare larger or smaller batches according to your preference.

Why These Ingredients?

Gelatin keeps the lotion light and non-greasy and also, it strengthens hair and improves hair volume. It is a win-win! Don’t you think so?

How to Use the Setting Lotion?

Apply on your strands and style as usual. I found it easier to apply on the hair and then spread the lotion using a comb and then styling it.

Hair can be dry or damp for the lotion, though I prefer dry and detangled hair for using the lotion.
