DIY Hair Pomade – Extra Hold

I was planning to prepare pomade for one of my friends. I wanted something with better hold and easy to prepare, while solving the purpose.

Her hair is short and quite difficult to manage, so I decided the better the hold, the likely it will stay in place. For her preference for spikes, I thought it would be an added advantage.

The best part about this recipe – the hold lasts the whole day and the hair doesn’t look dry or washed up when using this – it is natural and doesn’t damage your hair.

Mohawk

Ingredients

Beeswax – 3 Tsp.
Jojobal Oil – 2 Tsp.
Shea Butter – 2 Tsp.
Myrrh Essential Oil – a few drops
Vitamin E Oil – a few drops
Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.

Instructions

In your double boiler, melt together Shea Butter and Beeswax together.

When almost melted, add Argan Oil, Vitamin E Oil and Jojoba Oil.

Remove from heat and add Myrrh Essential Oil after a minute.

Now, refrigerate this mixture for a bit and then, whip using your hand blender.

Once the mixture reaches the texture of a pudding transfer to a sterilized jar and set aside.

I usually leave it overnight for setting, before I begin to use.

How to Use It?

Take a small dollop of the mixture and apply on your hair. Style as usual. Remember: This gives a good hold and a little goes a long way.

Many prefer applying pomade to slightly wet hair, though dry hair works too.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add a spoon of Starch powder, though it is optional. I don’t add it and prefer to get with this recipe for most part. It works equally well. I like that shine this recipe gives, though if you want to tone it down, starch powder does it real good.

You can add any essential oil(s) you like including Lavender, Peppermint, Musk, Rosemary, Lemon, Tangerine, etc.

You can alter the recipe based on your preference for hold. This one offers more hold and ideal if you are opting for styles like Mohawk, spikes, etc. If you want a lighter hold, reduce beeswax.

You can also use Clay instead of starch powder for this recipe.

If you add a dash of Candelilla Wax, it gives a nice shine to your hair. You can but back a portion of Beeswax and substitute it instead – for that shine.

Shelf Life

Since we haven’t used water-based ingredients, this recipe lasts longer than water-based hair gel or other preparations that use hydrosols. I usually keep this for a few weeks.

Why These Ingredients?

The combination of Beeswax, Shea Butter and Oils gives a nice hold, but also, doesn’t overdo it. It also doesn’t leave hair dry or frizzy or damaged, like some store-bought pomade. An all-natural recipe that’s nourishing and strengthening while also offering hold, what’s’ not to like about it? The Essential Oils add a nice aroma, while also adding value to the recipe.
