DIY Touch Up Stick for Hiding Grays

Are gray hairs becoming a constant thorn in your side? No worries, here’s a touch up stick you can use to hide them in a jiffy!

I don’t like the coloring products that are available in the market, as fancy as they are, because they’re loaded with chemicals. I do use natural options for coloring my hair from time to time, but what about when hair grows out and grays show up near the roots? That’s when I need a touch up. Isn’t it?

I usually stick to closer to dark brown shade when coloring my hair, because it is my natural hair color and I love that color! Though black is the most common hair color here, I love my brown just fine and rarely tempted to try other colors. Besides, the ingredients used for preparing natural brown dye also help my hair and scalp and will curb the premature graying with time.

Brown Stick

So, I have come up with an idea to create my own touch up stick, as I don’t like how the store-bought ones leave my hair dry and frizzy after use. I wanted something that’s easy to use and less messy and I did not mind if I have retouch more often, but I felt using something liquid based is too much of mess to handle. So, I went with a stick option, which means, there would be no mess and it solves my purpose just fine! The best part – it is really easy to prepare and doesn’t cost a lost.

How the idea came about is quite funny if you ask me! I was preparing to head out for a function and realized there were a few grays showing up and I can’t fix it with my Mascara like I did sometimes, since it leaves my hair a tad dry and stiff like it is supposed to – after all, that’s what Mascara does right? So, I needed my hair soft and so, I decided to rub in my matte chocolate lipstick to see if it helps – after all, I can wipe off if it doesn’t. Yes, it worked for me then and ever since, I have been playing around with a few ingredients to come up with what works for my hair.

So, here’s the recipe for you.

Ingredients

Shea Butter – 1 Tsp.
Beeswax – 1 Tsp.
Cocoa Butter – 1 Tsp.
Coconut Oil – 1 Tsp.
Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.
Black Iron Oxide Powder – ¼ Tsp.
Brown Iron Oxide – ¼ Tsp.
Red Iron Oxide – a pinch

Instructions

Melt the Shea Butter, Beeswax, Cocoa Butter along with Coconut Oil in your double boiler.

When fully melted, remove from heat and add the oxide pigments along with Argan Oil.

Stir to combine and incorporate thoroughly.

Pour into lipstick or lip balm container and let it set.

Done!

How to Use the Stick?

Just rub over the strands where you have gray hair showing up needing coverage and style as usual.

Shelf Life

This lasts a good few months. Just go with the shelf life of the ingredients you use to get an idea.

Tips to Tweak the Recipe

You can add a few drop of Vitamin E Oil to this recipe. Since Argan Oil is rich in Vitamin E, I did not add it additionally.

This works well for brown hair, though you can tweak the ratio of the oxide pigments to get the right shade for your hair. You can also add other color pigments depending on your hair color.
