We have tried using Flax Seed for most part, in our hair gel recipes. This is an alternative with Gelatin, for those who don’t want to use Flax Seeds.
Basically, Flax Seeds are more preferred by those with curly hair, or those with frizzy hair, as the slippery texture of Flax Seed gel aids with detangling. However, what about those with straight hair? Or what about those who don’t want a very slippery gel? Or what about those who just don’t prefer Flax Seeds?
That’s where Gelatin comes into play! This is a very simple and straightforward recipe; of course, you can modify to suit your taste and requirements. Let’s take a look at the ingredients first!
Ingredients
Unflavored Gelatin – ½ Tsp.
Essential Oil – 10 – 15 Drops
Distilled Water – 1 Cup
Aloe Vera Gel – 2 Tbsp.
Vitamin E Oil – a few drops
Argan Oil – 1 Tsp.
Instructions
Heat the water in a bowl.
Remove from heat and add the unflavored gelatin powder.
Stir to combine.
Add in the Aloe Vera Gel, Vitamin E Oil, Argan Oil and Essential Oil you’ve chosen and mix well.
You can use a hand blender and whip it slightly to get them combine well.
Transfer to your hair gel container.
Refrigerate for an hour or two, to set.
Tips to Tweak the Recipe
You can skip the Aloe Vera Gel, but I add it because it is hydrating, moisturizing and helps with detangling (mild).
You can use any Essential Oil of your choice – Lemon, Peppermint, Citrioda, Cinnamon or the like are great choices.
Vitamin E Oil adds to the shelf life of the recipe, though you can skip if it leaves your hair greasy – can happen if you hair is too thin, or oily.
If you don’t prefer Gelatin, you can use Xanthum Gum instead. If you are looking at using Flax Seeds, we have already uploaded a few recipes with Flax Seeds earlier. You can check them out here, here and here.
Why This Recipe?
It is mess-free! No filtering / straining and no stirring 😉 It is a pretty easy to prepare and fool proof.
Many find Flax Seed Gel quite slimy – this isn’t like that and is like the commercial gels that you buy. For those who don’t prefer slimy consistency, this is a good alternative.
Besides, Gelatin is extremely nourishing being rich in protein and can promote hair growth, while Aloe Vera moisturizes your hair, Vitamin E and Argan Oil nourish your hair. What’s not to like about it?
Shelf Life
This usually lasts good for 2 – 3 weeks or more, especially with Vitamin E Oil added. However, I recommend preparing a fresh batch every 2 weeks or so – fresh is always better!
You can use normal water too, but I find using Distilled Water keeps the gel better longer. But considering we refrigerate the gel, you don’t have to go hunting for Distilled Water if you don’t want to.
